Free Content Marketing ROI Calculator — Measure Whether Your Content Pays Back
Enter what your content costs and the leads or sales it produced, and this content marketing ROI calculator works out ROI, payback and cost per lead. It uses the standard formula and only your own numbers. It will not guess how much of a sale content deserves: you decide that. No signup, nothing leaves your browser.
Enter at least one cost and the leads, close rate and revenue per customer (or direct revenue) to start.
The Content Marketing ROI Formula
Return on investment is the profit from content divided by what the content cost: ROI = (return − cost) ÷ cost, shown as a percentage. If content cost 5,000 and produced 8,000 of revenue, ROI is (8,000 − 5,000) ÷ 5,000 = 60%. The calculator adds the cost lines you enter, including the time of your own team, then works out the return from leads × close rate × revenue per customer, plus any revenue you can attribute directly.
What This Calculator Reports
- Total cost across creation, promotion, tools and internal time
- Total return from customers won (leads × close rate × revenue) plus direct revenue
- ROI as a percentage, and whether the content has paid back so far
- Cost per lead and cost per customer, which are easier to compare between channels than ROI
- Break-even: how many leads you would have needed at your close rate to cover the cost
Why Content ROI Is Hard to Pin Down
Three things make content ROI slippery. First, attribution: a customer may read several pages, see a social post and then search your brand name. Giving the first or last page all the credit is a choice, not a fact. Second, timing: content often pays back over many months, so a short window understates it, while counting years of benefit against one quarter of cost overstates it. Third, cost: people often count writer fees and forget their own time, tools and promotion. Use the calculator for a defensible estimate, state your assumptions, and re-run it with a longer window as content ages.
How to Get the Inputs
- Leads from content. In Google Analytics, count conversions from organic search and from the pages you want to measure. If you also use a CRM, check the lead source there.
- Close rate. Use your own history of leads that became customers, not an industry average.
- Revenue per customer. Choose a window, such as first-year revenue, and use it consistently.
- Search performance. Pair this with your monthly Search Console numbers using the SEO report generator, so traffic and revenue sit side by side.

Content Marketing ROI Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate content marketing ROI?
Subtract the total cost of content from the revenue it produced, divide by the cost and multiply by 100. Include creation, promotion, tools and your own time in the cost.
What is a good content marketing ROI?
Any positive ROI means the content has paid back in your measured window. What counts as good depends on your margins, your sales cycle and how long you are willing to wait. This calculator does not claim a benchmark.
Does the tool estimate my close rate or customer value?
No. It uses only what you enter. Defaults would hide the assumption that matters most.
How long should I measure content for?
Search content often takes months to rank and keeps working afterwards, so measure at several windows, such as 3, 6 and 12 months, and compare.
Should I include my own time in the cost?
Yes. Leaving it out makes ROI look better than it is. Use an hourly cost for the people who worked on the content.
Does this tool store or send my data anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server, including ours.
