What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are small tags added to the end of a URL that tell Google Analytics exactly where a visitor came from. Without them, Analytics can only guess at traffic sources using referrer data — which breaks down completely for email, social apps, and offline campaigns (QR codes, print ads) that don't pass a referrer at all.

The Five UTM Parameters Explained

Parameter Answers Example
utm_sourceWhich site or platform sent the trafficnewsletter, facebook, google
utm_mediumWhat type of traffic it isemail, cpc, social, referral
utm_campaignWhich specific campaign or promotionspring_sale_2026
utm_termWhich paid keyword triggered the adrunning+shoes
utm_contentWhich specific ad or link variant, for A/B testslogolink vs. textlink

Common UTM Mistakes

  • Inconsistent capitalization or spelling — "Facebook", "facebook", and "FB" all show up as three separate sources in your reports instead of one
  • Spaces in parameter values — use underscores or hyphens instead (spaces get encoded as "%20" and become hard to read in reports)
  • Tagging internal links — never add UTM parameters to links between pages on your own site; it resets the visitor's original session source in Analytics
  • No naming convention — agree on a source/medium/campaign naming standard before a team starts tagging links, or your reports fragment into dozens of near-duplicate labels

Free UTM Builder FAQs

Do UTM parameters affect my SEO or page ranking?

No. UTM-tagged URLs are just for analytics tracking and have no effect on search rankings. Just make sure your page has a proper canonical tag so search engines don't treat the tagged URL as a separate page from the clean one.

Which fields are actually required?

Google Analytics needs source, medium, and campaign to attribute traffic properly. Term and content are optional and mainly useful for paid search and A/B testing specific ad variations.

Should I use UTM links for internal navigation?

No — UTM parameters are meant for links coming from outside your site (ads, emails, social posts). Adding them to internal links can overwrite the visitor's original traffic source in Analytics.

Will a long UTM URL look unprofessional in an email or ad?

It can. Many marketers run the final tagged URL through a link shortener for anything customer-facing, while keeping the full UTM link for their own tracking records.

Does this tool store or send my data anywhere?

No. The URL is built entirely in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server, including ours.
