What Are Open Graph Tags?
Open Graph tags are meta tags (originally created by Facebook, now used by nearly every platform) that control how your page appears when someone shares its link — the title, description, and image shown in the preview card. Without them, platforms fall back to guessing from your page's regular title tag and a random image, which often looks broken or unappealing.
Why the Preview Card Matters
A link with a missing or ugly preview gets fewer clicks than one with a clear title, compelling description, and a real image — this is true across social platforms, Slack, WhatsApp, and even some search engines that surface OG data. Since the card is often the only thing a scrolling user sees before deciding to click, it functions as free ad copy for every share your content gets.
Image Size Recommendations
- Minimum: 1200 x 630px — the current standard recommended by Facebook and LinkedIn for a crisp, non-cropped card
- Aspect ratio: 1.91:1 — images with a different ratio get cropped unpredictably by different platforms
- Keep text off the edges — some platforms crop image corners on certain devices; keep any text or logos centered
- Use an absolute URL — a relative image path (like "/images/cover.jpg") will not resolve correctly when a crawler outside your domain reads it
Free Social Share Preview FAQs
Why does my link still show an old preview after I updated the tags?
Most platforms cache the preview the first time a link is shared and won't re-check it automatically. Use each platform's own debugging tool (Facebook Sharing Debugger, LinkedIn Post Inspector) to force a re-scrape after changes.
Do I need separate tags for Twitter/X?
X reads its own twitter:card meta tags but falls back to standard Open Graph tags if those aren't present. Adding both gives you more control over how the X-specific card renders.
Does this affect my SEO or search rankings?
Not directly — Open Graph tags aren't a ranking factor. They do affect click-through rate on social shares, which can indirectly support traffic and engagement signals.
What happens if I don't set an og:image?
Most platforms will either show no image at all, or attempt to auto-select an image from the page — often with unpredictable and unflattering results. Always set one explicitly.
Does this tool store or send my data anywhere?
No. Everything is generated in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server, including ours.
