Free Meta Description Checker: Length, Width and Snippet Preview

Paste a title and meta description and this meta description checker counts the characters, estimates the pixel width, shows how the snippet may look on desktop and mobile, and checks your target keyword. A bulk mode checks a whole list. No signup, nothing leaves your browser.

The preview is an approximation. Google decides what to show and cuts snippets to fit the device width, so the real result can differ.

    Bulk Meta Description Checker

Paste one description per line, or one title | description pair per line. The tool gives each a length, an estimated width and a status, and flags duplicates.

What the Meta Description Checker Measures

    • Characters: the length of the description including spaces, which is the number most guides quote
    • Estimated width: the width in pixels of the text set in 14px Arial in your browser, because search results are cut by width, not by character count
    • Status: short (under 120 characters), in range (120 to 155), borderline (156 to 160) or too long (over 160)
    • Title length: a 60 character target for the title, which is a safe guide rather than a Google rule
    • Keyword checks: whether your target keyword appears in the description and in its first 120 characters, and whether it appears in the title
    • Common problems: line breaks, HTML tags, double spaces, a description that repeats the title, and a word repeated four or more times
    • Preview: a desktop and a mobile approximation of the snippet, cut where a long description may be shortened

How Long Should a Meta Description Be?

Google sets no limit. Its page on snippets says there is no limit on how long a meta description can be, but the snippet is truncated as needed, typically to fit the device width. Most guides give 155 to 160 characters as the practical maximum and about 120 characters for mobile, so this tool uses 120 to 155 as the in-range zone. We compared the numbers in a guide of our own: meta description length, with data from eight ranking guides and 363 of our posts.

    How the Width Estimate Works

The tool measures your text with the browser's canvas in 14px Arial and shows the result in pixels. Tools and guides quote different limits, from about 920 to 985 pixels for desktop descriptions, and Google changes how it displays results, so treat the number as a rough guide. If the estimate is well over 920 pixels, shorten the text even when the character count looks safe. Wide letters such as m and w take more room than narrow ones such as i and l, which is why two descriptions with the same character count can have different widths.

    How to Use the Results

    • Put the main point first. If the end is cut off, nothing important is lost.
    • Add a reason to click. A description under 120 characters often has room for a benefit, a number or a detail.
    • Make each one unique. The bulk mode flags exact duplicates across your list.
    • Check the title too. Titles are cut by width as well. Our SERP snippet preview shows a result in full, and our meta tag generator builds the full set of tags.
    • Do not stuff keywords. Google says descriptions made of long strings of keywords are less likely to be shown.

    Meta Description Checker FAQs

What is a meta description checker?

A tool that counts the characters in a meta description, estimates how wide it will be in search results and flags problems such as being too long or too short. This one also previews the snippet and checks a target keyword.

How many characters should a meta description be?

Google sets no limit, but snippets are cut to fit the device width. About 120 to 155 characters is a safe target, and most guides quote 160 as the top.

Why does the tool show pixels as well as characters?

Search results are cut by width, not by character count. A description full of wide letters is cut sooner than one with the same number of characters in narrow letters, so the width estimate is a useful second check.

Will Google show my meta description exactly as written?

Not always. Google says it sometimes uses the meta description when it describes the page better than other parts of the content, and it may use other text instead.

Does the length of a meta description affect rankings?

Google does not say length is a ranking factor. Length affects how the snippet looks and whether it is cut off, which can affect clicks.

Can I check many descriptions at once?

Yes. Use the bulk mode below the main checker: paste one description or one title and description pair per line, and download the results as a CSV.

Does this tool fetch my page or store my text?

No. You paste the text, and everything is processed in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored on any server, including ours.
