What This Does

  • Strips punctuation and symbols — apostrophes, question marks, ampersands and brackets never end up in the address
  • Separates words with hyphens — the separator Google recommends over underscores
  • Lowercases everything — so /Apple and /apple never become two different pages
  • Removes accents — é, ü, ñ and ç become e, u, n and c, with ß written as ss
  • Trims stop words (optional) — drops small filler words such as the, and and of to keep the slug short
  • Caps the length (optional) — shortens at a word boundary so a slug is never cut in the middle of a word
  • Handles a list — paste a column of titles and get one slug per line

What Makes a Good URL Slug

The slug is the last part of a page address, the bit after the final slash. Google's URL structure guidance asks for readable words rather than long ID numbers, a simple structure and as few parameters as possible. It also recommends hyphens instead of underscores to separate words, because that helps people and search engines identify the concepts in the URL.

Case matters too. Google treats /APPLE and /apple as distinct URLs, so mixed-case slugs invite duplicate pages if a link is ever typed or generated in a different case. Picking one case, usually lowercase, and sticking to it removes the problem.

Google also says characters outside the ASCII range should be percent-encoded. That is why this tool offers to turn accented letters into plain ones. Scripts with no Latin equivalent, such as Arabic or Japanese, stay as they are and are flagged, since they need percent-encoding in the final address.

Slug Generator FAQs

Should I use hyphens or underscores in a slug?

Hyphens. Google's documentation recommends hyphens instead of underscores to separate words in URLs.

Does capitalization matter in a URL?

Yes. Google treats /APPLE and /apple as different URLs, so using one case throughout, usually lowercase, avoids accidental duplicates.

Should I remove stop words from a slug?

It is a style choice rather than a rule. Removing words like the and of makes slugs shorter, but a slug that still reads naturally to a person is just as good. Use the option when a title is long.

How long should a slug be?

There is no fixed limit in Google's guidance, which asks for simple, readable URLs. A few meaningful words is usually enough, and the optional length cap here helps keep long titles in check.

What happens to non-Latin characters?

They are kept as typed and the tool warns you. Google says non-ASCII characters should be percent-encoded in the final URL, which most CMS platforms and browsers handle for you.

Does this tool store or send my data anywhere?

No. Everything is processed in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server, including ours.
