What Is a Sitemap For?
An XML sitemap is a file listing every page you want search engines to know about. It doesn't force indexing — Google still decides what to index based on quality and other signals — but it speeds up discovery, especially for new sites, large sites, or pages that aren't well linked internally. It's a discovery aid, not a ranking factor by itself.
What Actually Belongs in a Sitemap
- Canonical, indexable pages only — leave out redirect targets, noindexed pages, and duplicate URL parameters
- Absolute URLs — always the full
https://address, never a relative path - Only pages you actually want ranked — including thin or low-value pages just dilutes crawl attention
Do Priority and Changefreq Still Matter?
Google has stated it largely ignores <priority> and <changefreq> values, treating them as unreliable since site owners rarely keep them accurate. They're still valid sitemap protocol fields and some other crawlers do use them, but don't expect them to meaningfully influence how Google crawls your site — <lastmod> (last modified date) is the one still worth keeping accurate if you can.

No. A sitemap only helps search engines discover your pages faster — indexing still depends on content quality, crawl budget, and other ranking signals.
How many URLs can one sitemap file contain?
The sitemap protocol caps a single file at 50,000 URLs or 50MB uncompressed. Larger sites use a sitemap index file that links to multiple smaller sitemaps.
Where do I submit my sitemap to Google?
Upload it to your site's root, then submit the URL under the Sitemaps section of Google Search Console. You can also reference it directly in your robots.txt file.
Should I include images or just pages?
This tool generates a standard page sitemap. Image and video sitemaps use additional XML tags and are typically handled as a separate, more advanced sitemap type.
