llms.txt is a plain-text file, written in simple Markdown, that sits at the root of your domain (like robots.txt or sitemap.xml) and gives AI assistants a short, structured summary of who you are and where your most important pages live. What Makes a Good llms.txt File
A good file is short, accurate, and specific — not a copy-pasted homepage. Three things separate a useful llms.txt from a wasted one:
- A one-line summary that could stand alone — if an AI only reads that one line, it should still describe your business correctly
- Real page links, not just the homepage — point directly at the pages that answer specific questions (pricing, services, contact) rather than making the AI dig for them
- Plain language, no marketing fluff — "family-owned plumbing company serving Round Rock since 2004" beats "your trusted partner for all things plumbing"
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Copying your meta description verbatim — llms.txt should add context a meta tag can't fit, not repeat it
- Only listing the homepage — the whole point is pointing an AI straight at your most useful specific pages
- Never updating it — an llms.txt describing services you dropped two years ago actively misleads the AI reading it
- Placing it anywhere but the root —
