Free GMB Rank Checker Grid — Plan and Score a Local Geo-Grid Check
This free GMB rank checker grid builds a map of check points around your business, gives you a Google Maps link for each one, and scores the ranks you type in as an average, a top-3 coverage figure and a colour heatmap. It is a manual check, so there is no signup and nothing leaves your browser.
Open each point, find your business in the organic results (skip anything marked Sponsored) and type its position. Leave a point empty if you are not in the top 20 and tick "not found".
How to Use This Grid
- Enter your keyword and centre point. The centre is usually your business address. In Google Maps, right-click it and click the coordinates at the top of the menu to copy them.
- Choose a grid. A 5 × 5 grid with 1 mile between points covers about 4 miles in each direction. Use a wider gap for a service-area business and a smaller one for a shop that serves its own neighbourhood.
- Open every point. Each cell links to Google Maps, centred on that point, searching your keyword.
- Type your rank. Count only the organic results. Paid listings are labelled Sponsored and sit above them, so skip those.
- Read the score. The tool gives an average rank, how many points you are in the top 3 and top 10, and a heatmap you can screenshot for a client or a before-and-after comparison.
What This Tool Does Not Do
This is not an automatic rank tracker. Reading live Google Maps results needs a data source that a browser page cannot reach, so you do the checking and the tool does the layout and the maths. The numbers are a snapshot: your own Google account, device, location and the time of day can all change what you see, so use the grid to compare like with like, for example the same keyword and the same grid before and after a change.
Why Rank Changes From Place to Place
Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is how far each business is from the person searching, and if someone does not share where they are, Google uses what it knows about their location. That is why a business can sit first beside its own front door and nowhere on the other side of town. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so a grid like this is best used to find weak areas and track the effect of real improvements.
Geo-Grid Rank Checker FAQs
Does this tool check my rank automatically?
No. It builds the grid and the Google Maps links, and you type in the rank you see at each point. It then calculates the average, the top-3 and top-10 coverage and the heatmap.
Do sponsored results count as my rank?
No. Paid listings are labelled Sponsored and appear above the normal results. Count your position among the organic listings only.
Why do I get a different rank from someone else?
Local results depend on where the searcher is, and can also vary with the device, account and time. Treat a grid as a snapshot and compare checks made in the same way.
How do I find my latitude and longitude?
Open Google Maps, right-click your business location and click the pair of numbers at the top of the menu. They are copied, and you can paste them straight into the centre field.
What grid size should I use?
3 × 3 is quick for a small check. 5 × 5 is a good default for most local businesses. 7 × 7 gives more detail but means 49 manual checks.
Does this tool store or send my data anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser with JavaScript — nothing is uploaded, logged, or stored on any server, including ours. The map links open Google Maps in a new tab.
